Haikyo/Urban Exploration

In Japanese, ruins and abandonments are known as haikyo (廃墟) – literally ‘abandoned place’. Haikyo are particularly common in Japan because of its rapid industrialization, damage during World War II and the collapse of the 1980s real estate bubble. Exploring haikyo is something I have become more and more interested in since moving to Japan, and this page is dedicated to my documentation of these forgotten places. All photos were taken in Japan, unless otherwise stated in the title. Click images below for more photos and the story behind each location…

NOTE – I receive many emails and requests from urbex people who want information regarding the locations in these photos – please understand I cannot reveal such information. I love exploring these places, and I want to do everything I can to protect them, sadly this isn’t the case with some other people who like stealing from and/or vandalizing them. I cannot give you any information on their whereabouts whatsoever, so please don’t ask. Thank you for your understanding!
